Research on the Industrial Applications of Smart CBDC
China is the first major economy to pilot a central bank digital currency (CBDC) for retail use. This research explores the applications of smart digital currency, which refers to the digital yuan (e-CNY) integrated with smart contracts, across various industries and evaluates its impact on related sectors within China. The project aims to identify industries and scenarios where smart CBDC demonstrates significant potential, while uncovering common business practices, key characteristics, and relevant theoretical frameworks. Through field research, corporate visits, and data analysis, the study will primarily focus on tier-2 commercial banks and tier-2.5 institutions participating in the e-CNY pilot scheme. The findings aim to support the commercialization of the e-CNY, empowering, reshaping, and integrating both traditional banking operations and digital innovation. Additionally, the research seeks to provide insights that will guide future policy decisions and facilitate the broader rollout of the e-CNY.
