My last speech in IIMB
The time we have together always feels too short. I have almost finished one term at IIMB and I want to take this opportunity to share some of my insights, feelings, and observations from the past three months here.
As the first Chinese exchange student from Peking University, I am proud of taking the chance to study at the BEST management college in India. It has been my pleasure to meet and learn from such great professors and study alongside such gifted classmates. As what you are listening right now, my English is poor and I can’t always make myself understood. However, I am lucky to had so much help and understanding from both you, my fellow exchange students, and the greater IIM-Bangalore Community. Your support and friendship has helped us bridge tremendous cultural differences and backgrounds. I will never forget what the surprise you planned for me on my birthday. Truly, that moment was unforgettable, looking around the square and seeing so many different faces from different places celebrating together.
I made three wishes before I came here. First – I wished to learn, to be a student, soaking up new knowledge. Second – I wished to explore, to be experience new and different cultures, ways of thinking, and living. Third – I wished to make friends, because what adventure would be worth it if you had no one to share it with? Three months have been passed away, today I am proud to say, I have made all the wishes come true. I made friends in the class, at basketball, on the badminton court, there was someone who explained the local culture during the special dinners. There were others who taught me dancing on H and J block’s party. There were still someone else, who taught me about the Indian markets out in Bangalore’s awesome cafes and bars. The friends I’ve made here have been my greatest fortune—from my fellow exchange students to my Indian classmates to our respectable professors.
I have to admit, I’ve fallen in love with Indian music and Indian beer. Every time I look at you dance under the lights with that awesome music, I don't want to blink, I hope this beautiful picture could engraved in my mind. Because I know I can listen to Indian music and remember this moment when I am missing you after I return to China.
There is one thing I must ask your forgiveness for—and I can’t apologize enough…Although I say hello to you, my classmates, every day and I get warm greetings in return, I still cannot recall everyone’s names clearly. There is an old Chinese saying, “first time strangers, second time friends,” I hope you can communicate through more and let me remember you.
I flew 5000 kilometers over the Tibetan plateau and the Himalayas to meet you here, to know India, and I’ve been fortunate enough to bring my experiences to you, both as Max, a human, and Max, a Chinese citizen. In the past three months, I hope the information from me could help you if only a tiny bit, understand more about my country and the people there. I sincerely hope that my behavior does not make you dislike China, and you still want to visit there.
Both China and India are hugely important developing countries. Indeed, the future of the two countries moving together and cooperating will determines our globe’s future. I believe that one day we will eliminate political misunderstanding, hand in hand, and infinite cooperation may exist between you and me.
My President Xi Jinping once said in the speech: “A relationship based on interest will terminate when the interest expires; A relationship based on power will be abandoned when the power is lost; Only the relationship based on heart will enable an ever-lasting friendship.” Three months is a short time, but we have been able to meet with our hearts, and I believe our friendship will be ever-lasting.
Our last day here will be sad and for some of you, it might be the last time we see one another. Though it might be a bit, I promise to drink and dance with you all over again when I come back to India. And, please know that you are all cordially invited to China, Beijing in particular. I promise to show you the best of what Beijing has to offer, from food to sights to me! Thank you again for the fun, the friendships, and the memories. I love you guys.
