Topic: The Prisoners' Redemption: A Field Experiment on Charitable Contribution by Chineses Prison Inmates

Abstract:
We conduct a field experiment to study the pro-social preferences of Chinese prison inmates. We introduce a charitable contribution scheme into the workplace, and tie the contribution to the inmates' output. The main treatment variable is the social identity of the beneficiary. We find that during the five-day experiment, the subjects significantly increase their output. Hence, the vast majority of inmates exhibit strong pro-social preferences. When the beneficiary is an inmate, the subjects' output increases 7% more than when the beneficiary is an ordinary citizen. However, we also document the effect of negative group identity: long-incarceration inmates have smaller output increase than those relatively new inmates when the beneficiary is an inmate. On the other hand, the length of remaining sentence doesn't affect their output.
