Self-introduction

My name is Dongjoo Kwak, from Korea.

I grew up in Korea and worked for Samsung life insurance company for five years. My major is Chinese language and literature. After the PKU MBA, I got the job in Panasonic, and I'm working in Beijing as an expatriate. My current position is senior staff in Human Resource strategy development department.

1.Why choose IMBA program and how to get prepared for it?

One of the reasons I choose IMBA is because I expected a more diversified environment. When I prepared the PKU MBA application, I contacted many Alumni. All of them said IMBA has more diversified and multi-cultural environment. Because I didn't have enough cross-cultural experience at that moment, I decided to apply to IMBA.

2.Could you share some impressive memories during the program, what you think the most helpful and meaningful things you learned here.

Because I didn't have enough managerial knowledge, GSM's core courses are beneficial for me. I could study the general knowledge required for a manager. In other hands, some courses provided a chance to know real business practice in China. Through these courses, I could understand a cultural background and business trend of China.

The best thing I got from GSM is People. We have around 40 students from seventeen different countries. All of them have a fantastic background and unique work experiences. I studied a lot just by talking with my friends. After MBA, we are still strongly connected. When I need their help, they always become a great help. If I were not in GSM, I believe it is almost impossible to meet these precious friends.

3.How does IMBA program support and guide you for this job?

Panasonic was the partner company of my IPP. During IPP, the company gave our team a lot of chance to know about the company's history and Chance. They invited us to their museum and exhibition center in Japan. Moreover, we had an opportunity to listen to their current concern and future strategies from Company's CHRO. After IPP, I worked for the company as an intern, and finally, at the last December, I got the official offer.

Work experience

1.Previous experience (which position and which company), what you learned by these work experience, does it influence your next choice

I worked for the sales management division. For the first, I did marketing. I analyzed sales numbers and sales people's daily activity and developed a new market place and strategy to promote our insurance sales. This job required me a deep understanding of big data.

My second career step was recruiting and education manager. When I was a marketing manager, I researched how our people work and which kind of skills and abilities are required to be outstanding people. By leveraging this experience, I recruited talented applicants and educated them to overcome their hardship and to uncover their hidden potential.

Through this experience, I think I developed a basic understanding of Business. I learned how to read and analyze big data. And also had a chance to get closed the real business area and people.

2.How do you plan your career path, what are the top 3 metrics for your career selection, do they change over time and how?

My career plan is to become a business manager with rich experience by building various experiences in various countries. As a business manager, I think the higher the position, the greater the importance of experience in multiple fields and markets than in one area.

For me, the priority of job selection is authority and responsibility. Because all tasks are interconnected, the type of work is not considered necessary.

Second is self-development. I prefer to be able to develop myself through work and to increase my uniqueness.

The third is the work environment. I prefer well-balanced work and life, challenging work environment, and horizontal organization structure.

3.As our senior in this field, could you please share some advice for we students and junior graduates

I always recommend studying Chinese very hard for my MBA friends. If you can't speak Chinese, it will be tough to find opportunities after the MBA.

Second, Focus on the type of work and the experience you can get through the work, rather than the brand of companies. Well-known companies are always full of talent. Maybe you cannot have a chance to leverage your knowledge and experience you have. In contrast, many companies want to recruit Peking University students, but they are always suffering from a lack of human resources.

Do you have something regretful in Peking University during this IMBA program?

When I joined the PKU MBA, I expected I could have a lot of job opportunities after MBA.  However, the reality is cold.

It is not easy to find a job in China. To be honest, it is quite competitive. As for internationals, we do not own an existing network to help us in career. We need more time to accommodate ourselves to local culture. Neither the school's brand nor the career center can guarantee a job offer. School certainly offers many opportunities. However, it is in China so you need to feel comfortable to find most of the opportunities are for Chinese or Chinese-speaking foreigners. If you are not good at Chinese, if you did not broad your network in China proactively, you will not prepare well to catch those opportunities. You will be frustrated after facing reality. I started a job searching form the second year, and it was already late, though we are reminded by career center and alumni to get start as early as possible.
